6/25 North Yorkshire Moors Railway

This is a railway that is run entirely by volunteers.  They act as ticket sellers, help restore and maintain the train engines, drive the trains, and collect tickets.  They own several antique diesel and two steam engines that make several trips from the towns of Pickering to Whitby each day.

After several days of stressful driving, I decided to take this train and let someone else do the driving today, even if it meant getting up early and driving 40 miles to the starting point of Pickering.

Luckily, I got there a bit early and found a place to park in the closest parking lot to the station, so it was a short walk.  (I value short walks these days!)

And here comes out train.  This is a 1967 diesel engine that was once a wreck left in a railroad yard.

The train stops briefly at several small towns, but I think this photo was taken close to Whitby, which is a large city on the North Sea.

Whitby station.  We had a little over an hour before the next train left to go back to Pickering.  I could have taken a later train, but I wanted to have some time to walk around Pickering before the shops closed at 5 pm.  I had just enough time in Whitby to visit a recommended hardware store just across the street from the station and grab a sandwich at a nearby cafe.

The hardware store was successful, as I was able to find a cushion to put on the rental car seat so I could see out better.

Here is what the train cars look like inside.  Going back, the train was almost empty, as most people spent more time in Whitby.

This is another one of their diesel trains, but a couple of years younger than the one we had.  They are incredibly noisy and sound a lot like an old truck without a muffler, struggling to go uphill.

And a couple of photos of the town of Pickering.

I drove back to my hotel through the middle of the moors so I could see more sheep and take a few more photos on this almost sunny day.
