I accidentally stumbled on this place as I was heading to York Castle Tower, and i had to stop. It was below the street level and surrounded by a pretty little garden. Its name reflects that it was founded (in 1357) by a group of merchants who transacted business abroad. This is an original Tudor building, which attracted me.
Here is their website that explains more about it: https://www.merchantshallyork.org/the-company/
I always look up at ceilings. This one was impressive.
You can see some of the centuries-old repairs here. Looks a little rough, but the building is still standing!
It's a little hard to tell from this photo, but the fireplaces are a couple of feet below the level of the floor. This was caused by the flooding the building experienced over the years. When I flooded, they just built the floor higher! The current floor was actually raised three times.
An interesting chest.
A chapel for members.
There was another great hall on the second floor, along with some officers and meeting rooms.
A timeline of this guild.
And some of the silver and brass owned by the guild.
