6/22 Scarborough Castle

There isn't  much left of this castle, but I knew it was located on a large promontory that stuck out into the North Sea, and so was a logical place to put a castle and had a terrific view.  Since it was uphill, I decided to take a cab here.

A little history.   This castle was begin in the 12th Century by Henry II, but there has been some sort of human habitation at this site for 4,000 years.  Here is a more detailed explanation of the history of this site from the English Heritage web site:  https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/scarborough-castle/history/

Unfortunately, the castle was destroyed in 1645 during the English Civil war.

This is the entrance to the castle.

And the long walk up to the main remaining building.

And some explanatory signage.

There is a small cafe and an ice cream stand at the castle, so it is a pleasant place to sit and enjoy the view or to walk around.

 A view to the north.

And a view to the south towards Scarborough.

Two views of the remainder of the castle.  One important thing to know is that the second floor, with the arched windows was the residence of the king and queen.

They had a well, which helped during sieges.

I really enjoyed a private tour by one of the volunteers.  He had planned a tour, but no one else wanted to go, so I got a lot of information about the place from him.

Afterwards, since it was downhill most of the way, I decided to walk back to 6/10ths of a mile back to my hotel.  Whew!
