6/12 The Borough & Spitalfields Markets

I have visited many things in London on previous trips, but had never visited any of the city markets, so on this trip I decided to visit two of them that are highly recommended.  I had read that the Borough market was primarily focused on food, while Spitalfields focused on antiques, handmade items, and stuff you might find in grandma's closet.  Since I would be at one at lunchtime, I decided to go to the Boroughs market first.

Borough Market

I was looking forward to an interesting lunch here with good food, but I was disappointed in the cost and lack of places to sit while you are eating,  In any case, this market does have an incredible array of food, both fresh and cooked.  Here are some photos I took:

These meat pies looked good, but the few seats and tables were full, so I bypassed them as they are not really finger food.  I also had no way to heat one up if I took it back to my hotel room.

Nice looking meat, but very costly!

Lovely strawberries, but a pint carton was priced at the equivalent of about $7.50.

Nectarines were priced at roughly $1.00 apiece or two for $2.00.

There was an interesting fish and chips place, but the meals were more than I cared to eat and they did not have a fish sandwich, plus there was the problem of finding a place to sit, so I ended up with this protein salad at a take-out place called Pret a Manger for about $11.00, including the Coke.

 Spitalfields Market

Spitalfields is in a slightly nicer part of town with nearby streets closed off and regular shops along the way.

Most of this looks like old restaurant silverware.  Did not see any prices, but there sure was a lot of it!

This booth had a lot of watches, but this is only about 20% of what they had.  A sign said all had been repaired to working condition.

An interesting hat booth.

Some booths, like this one, had new stuff that was handmade.

Not sure what the meaning of this elephant and her two children was.

I think this is the end, at least for this trip, of my market shopping.
